In Our Footsteps - Erikoussa
From Roda to Erikoussa
Having made a few basic enquiries about get-ting about on the Is-
land of Erikoussa, we decided to book the trip with Captain George’s Dreamer Cruises. With help, I was able to step from the harbour on to the boat and, fairly soon, we were underway and heading off. The day was perfect, the going was good and there were lots of opportunities to take photographs of the northern coast of Corfu. It took about one and a half hours from leaving the harbour at Asterkeri to tying up at Erikoussa. We let everyone else disembark before us, and then George explained where to go for a little exploration, during the four hours we had on the island.
It was slightly more difficult getting off than when boarding but that was because the harbour was lower than at Asterkeri. However, I made it and George said that he had a stool to use when getting back on later.
We decided a frappé was needed and headed away from the boat and along the road. We passed a lovely stretch of sand around the bay that is perfect for those wanting to go no further and we stopped at the ‘Oasis’ for a drink. The prices were OK and it was a lovely place to stop, with some sun, some shade & a relaxing atmosphere.
After refreshments, we headed off across the island. George had told of several different walks,
the island was just about manageable with the wheelchair, and is not far. There were a couple of very short, steep rises, which I walked up. We came back via the same route but we realised that we could have made a circuit, arriving back at the junction where the ‘Oasis’ is situated.
After a second stop at ‘Oasis’, this time for a snack and a drink, we returned to the boat. We were that last ones to arrive tending to be more relaxed about timings nowadays but we were not late. There were at least another three minutes left until our four hours on Erikoussa were up!
Getting back onto the boat was easier with the promised stool. The wheelchair was secured and then
we headed back to Roda. Soon after leaving Erikousa, George offered everyone a drink from a choice including cola, lemonade, wine and ouzo! Perfect refreshments.
As it was such a lovely day, George took us close in to the Canal d’Amour at Sidari for those who wanted to swim off the boat. There was a ladder down into the water, which was crystal clear and those who swam all said how good it was. With everyone back on
trip, even with mobility difficulties. If you use a wheelchair when out and about but can manage a few steps, then going on any trip with George’s Dreamer Cruises is not a major problem as George and his crew are always available to help. If you don’t need a wheelchair but can’t walk far, or just want a day relaxing, being on the boat is a fantastic experience, with plenty of photo opportunities and you could easily while away a few hours at one of the kafeneions on Erikoussa.
Boat trips from Roda
one was up to the helipad to get views across the whole island. We gave that one a miss but we did see other people up there while we were having our drinks.
The road across to the other side of
board, we headed back to Asterkeri where Helen was waiting for us. Again we waited for everyone else to disembark so that I could take my time in getting back on to dry land!
It was a perfect day and a lovely way to see the north coast of Corfu. I can thoroughly recommend this
