Cats in Roda
‘Not again surely’, was always the amazed answer to my declared holiday destination year after year. It was understandable as the choice of holiday deals and destinations was mind-blowing and is even more so now. But I had found a little corner of the world that suited me – a stress-free haven that ticked all the boxes, and still does, not just for me but for hundreds of regular visitors and new tourists who have discovered Roda. For these folk, this little village in northern Corfu re-materialises every season like an Hellenic ‘Brigadoon’ offering the authentic Greek experience through the medium of a tiny, vibrant community buzzing with life and laughter.
Rambling narrow streets, cats & dogs, half-rusted old pick-up trucks slowly making their way through the village selling fruit and vegetables to shops, householders and tourists wanting just half a water melon or a bag of peaches to take to the beach. It’s not unusual to see a taverna owner or waiter diving
into the street to embrace a new arrival and old friend, even if half-way through serving – because you’ve come back, you see, you’re part of the ‘family’ again. This is the heart and voice of Roda, positively bellowing out a welcome to all - a wee bit different to the wary, fixed smile of the concierge or hotelier with your key at reception and demanding your passport. The two things can’t, and shouldn’t, be compared.
In the current economic climate, with job insecurity or redundancy, a leaner Christmas than normal and concerns where the next six months mortgage payments are coming from, a young couple with kids or more mature holiday ‘shoppers’ are desperately looking for ‘value for money’. They are seeking a massive ‘chill-out’ factor and, equally important, total safety and friendliness from the locals and the environment. They can do no better than to come here – OK, you don’t get ‘sleepy little fishing villages’ in resorts any more, but Roda is the closest you’ll find and
is ideally situated as a base to explore the outstanding country-side by walking, cycling, horse-riding or hired transport – all available from the village.
Holiday brochures, by and large, do their readers a disservice by not now offering a choice of the above alongside the larger complexes with poolside snack bars and ‘in-house’ entertainment every night. There is a whole neglected market out there, anxious to catch a breather and recharge the batteries in a tranquil and beautiful setting.

Biased, of course I am – and so will you be!
