Walks from Roda through countryside
We all have our favourite weeks to visit Roda and we can often tell which month it is by the faces that greet us in the village. Unfortunately, for work or family reasons, many of us are tied to specific periods of July & August and accommodation for these weeks is often booked months in advance. For some, however, there is more flexibility. Being in the Mediterranean, Corfu has a gentle climate with a mild spring and travelling at this time is ideal for those who have strict budget as well as those who dislike the higher temperatures of the summer months. Roda opens its doors at the beginning of May
each year and from then until June can be the perfect time for families with young children, and older or less mobile visitors, to sample the delights of the village and its surroundings. In May, there is still time to see the colourful flowers and trees that make this island so spectacular throughout the closed season. By the time July arrives, most of them have been dried out, no more than a distant memory until the return of the autumn rains. For those who want more activity, there is horse-riding, cycling and a wide variety of easy coastal and more demanding hillside walks with well-documented trails to quaint villages and painted churches
steeped in history and tradition. Travel east or west from the village and you can explore the whole of Corfu’s north coast, go a few hundred metres south from Roda and you begin to climb through olive groves up age-old paths and tracks that reward you with unbelievable views of the island and the not-to-distant Balkans. The Roda of May & June is a completely different village to that seen by mid-summer visitors. The climate is settling down but not too hot, local people are free to spend more time to greet their visitors, there is more accommodation to choose from, the fields and trees are a riot of colour and, above all, it is good value for money. Why not join those of us who have discovered
